Cloud Tip of the Month- August 2013   no comments

cloud and exclamation sign illustration

Why move to The Cloud? Here is August’s cloud tip!

Cloud Architecture is Exceptionally Flexible

The entire concept of cloud computing is divided into three forms of cloud. These include Public cloud, Private Cloud and Hybrid Cloud. All three have significant characteristics; however their choice depends on the personal requirements of businesses.

Check out the benefits!

  • Public Cloud

In this type of cloud form, data stored is in a cloud server- which is located at a distant place elsewhere. It enables users to share and access data from anywhere and at any point of time. This means public cloud promotes shared environment for businesses. It can save having to hire a tech department and can be placed in a data center like TurnKey, where our techs can handle your entire IT infrastructure.

  • Private Cloud

A private cloud is beneficial for those organizations that do not want to share their confidential data with any third party. Data stored in a private cloud is secured in the firewall settings, which enable only the authorized parties to access data and do not invite any third party. The private cloud model is good for super-secure businesses, but tend to cost more to buy all the equipment and hire techs.

  • Hybrid Cloud

A hybrid cloud is a mix of both and gives users or business entities the advantage of both the cloud environments. Suppose, a business enterprise wants to share its services and products with its clients across the globe, but at the same time wants to hide the confidential information from them, Hybrid cloud architecture would suit best for such types of businesses.

Crowdfunding- The Arts and Technology   no comments

TheCreationOfKevinKoalaWikipedia states that crowdsourcing is “the practice of obtaining needed services, ideas, or content by soliciting contributions from a large group of people, and especially from an online community, rather than from traditional employees or suppliers.” While that is a spot on definition, it is not actually “Wikipedia’s “definition.  Wikipedia is just that – a crowdsourcing site. Where you, me, and anyone else can set up an account and submit anything we want, to any article.

I could go on right now and submit that Donald Trump was voted Vogue Magazine’s Sexiest Celebrity of 2013. Or that the Boston Red Sox have the most World Series titles in MLB history. Or, that there have been multiple unicorn sightings just north of Reno, Nevada in the past decade.

The Wikipedia definition of crowdsourcing was actually cited from the Merriam-Webster Dictionary. Why? Because the majority of the people who take part on this crowdsourcing site said it was.  It is widely accepted that information about a subject coming from 100 people will usually be more thorough, honest and accurate, than when the information is coming from one or two people.

This type of “power of the people” has not only been seen successful on the online encyclopedia, Wikipedia, but on other sites where “crowdfunding” is the name of the game. People can now support music, technology, art, film, games, photography, or really anything depending on what they want to see or have succeed in the future.

Investors in businesses, major record labels, film studios, and large corporations shell out tons of cash to create new products and projects. But thousands of startups, independent musicians, and other entities try to get their foot in the door to their industry, and struggle to afford what they need in order to make their idea work.

Sites like Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and Crowdfunder are all outlets for people with big ideas, to get the attention of thousands of people who may just want to support them both creatively and financially.

Recently a musician by the name of Kevin Devine was able to fund his project (two albums: one acoustic, and one with his band. “The Goddamn Band”… how can you not support that?) where he raised over $100,000 from over 1,000 people.

Backers could pledge from $1 to $4,000 where each interval of cash would get the pledger a “gift” back. From an acoustic demo of a song, to a “private 60-minute acoustic show at your house, all travel and accommodation included – you pick the setlist.”

Mr. Devine says himself on Kickstarter, “I had a thought-provoking conversation with a friend…about all the pitfalls and dangers of crowd-sourcing/funding ‘the arts,’” He says. “It’s a really easy thing to do badly, or cheesily, or in a way that can feel … compromised, hacky, undignified. “ For an artist, it’s hard to say. It can seem tacky, but over 1,000 fans knew what he was capable of, and he is now fully funded and recording his albums. Independently, Kevin Devine is able to write and record his own piece of art for the fans of his music.

With funding like this comes freedom. No big-wigs looking over your shoulder telling you what to change. The projects and products come straight from the inventors, with the engagement and the help of the backers.

Right now, you can go to Kickstarter and fund projects like a solar panel that can power devices from smartphones to laptops, handmade leather goods, or a 3D printer (almost funded $3,000,000).  You can pick and choose what you support, which products you want, and together the world can begin causing change in areas they want to succeed.

So what do you think? Will sites like Kickstarter push a company to be the next Apple? Will Kevin Devine be the next George Micheal? A boy can dream…

We are STILL at it! Our tech team has been working everyday around the clock to get our data center- phase two- complete. With the delivery  of a brand new pod, it sometimes feels like an IT Christmas around here. In fact, we feel like little kids when a new shipment arrives and we get to unload it… it’s like unwrapping new toys. Then we get to play with the toys,  put everything together, show our friends and hey! We didn’t forget the cookies!

“The” Word   no comments

the

OK, this joke is a stretch, but here it goes anyways….

Paul Mathis is probably happy his name is not Paul Mathe. Why? Because it seems like he’s got it out for the word “the.” While it is the number one used word in the English language, Mr. Mathis is looking to get rid of it… or at least for when we have to type it.

Mathis is an Australian restaurant owner who is hoping to change the way we use the word “the,” by creating a symbol like the “and” ampersand symbol (&).

“The word ‘and’ is only the fifth-most used word in English and it has its own symbol — the ampersand,” Mathis said. “Isn’t it time we accorded the same respect to ‘the’?”

I mean, the man’s got a point, right? Mathis created a little diddly that looks like this:

the2

Simple, sleek, and hey! It even saves you two characters for when you tweet.

“The main functionality of this is in the texting space,” Mathis goes on. “Maybe in 500 years’ time people will be amazed that there was a time when we didn’t use (the symbol)”.

While I think it’s a great idea, Mathis is having a tough time convincing Apple.  After a request for them to change their keyboards, Apple responded saying, “Apps should be engaging and exciting, enabling users to do something they couldn’t do before; or to do something in a way they couldn’t do before or better than they could do it before.”

In 34 words, Apple crushed a man’s dreams and did it all without using the word, “the,” once.

Take that, Paul Mathe, I mean Mathis.

Will the Obama Climate Change Plan impact your data center or business?   2 comments

Posted at Jun 27, 2013 @ 11:51am green,New York Datacenter

President Obama outlined his new plan to cut carbon pollution on Tuesday, June 25th 2013 during his speech at Georgetown University.  The big news is that President Obama is directing the United States Environmental Protection Agency to impose carbon pollution standards for power companies that will eventually lead to individual businesses as well being in the government’s cross-hairs.

The major point to the U.S. Government’s plan is to focus on efficiency in power generation and efficient power consumption to help minimize carbon

pollution.  The bottom line is that by reducing carbon pollution the rapidly increasing change in climate (for the worse) across the globe will be eased, slowed or even reversed at some point.

The primary concern of those who oppose any form of limits on carbon pollution (or enforced efficiency’s for energy production and usage) is that cleaner energy and green solutions can be seen as something that will increase costs short term and hurt the economy.  The reality is that the financial success of the future will in part be on controlling total energy costs through efficiency and renewable sources that will have stable cost structures (unlike fossil fuels as they run out will drasticaly increase in costs, as well as the costs associated with cleaning up after utilizing fossil fuels which generate significant carbon pollution).  The President’s plan focuses on the real future goal of minimizing the impact on the environment to reduce climate change through reductions in carbon emissions across the country.

The President stated “A low-carbon clean energy economy can be an engine of growth for generations to come” and I personally agree with this. In fact it’s in part what TurnKey Internet has focused on closely for the last several years through our green technology investments and massive investments in clean renewable energy sources such as our on-site solar power plant.  Over the last several years TurnKey Internet has invested millions of dollars on our new data center located in Latham, New York – and just last month was named an ENERGY STAR® certified data center by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), ranking TurnKey’s datacenter among the best of the best for energy efficiency through design, and green technologies utilized. At the time of the announcement, TurnKey’s data center was one of just two certified facilities in New York, and one of 38 in the country to carry the presitigous ENERGY STAR® certified data center designation.

TurnKey’s philosophy has always been to minimize our impact on the environment. In April during the week long Earth Day 2013 awareness celebration we announced that our Latham, New York datacenter achieved a zero carbon foot print, by utilizing 100% renewable power resources (our on-site solar power generation plant, and activation of the New York Governor’s Recharge New York Hydro-Electric feed to our facility).  Our multi-million dollar investment in efficient green datacenter technology  and clean renewable energy may seem high in cost – but the reality is that over time the actual cost of energy is lower in our facility compared to similar facilities, and we maintain a positive impact by not creating any carbon pollution with our zero carbon foot print.  The point: it is possible to be economically positive and green at the same time.

In the next few years government will begin forcing power companies, and businesses which consume the largest amounts of power (like data centers which as an industry will be worse polluters than the airline industry by 2020!) to become more efficient and utilize green resources.  This will be to help reduce the impact our country makes on the worldwide climate change problem that has only been getting worse the last decade.  TurnKey Internet is years ahead of the game, not because we knew the government would eventually catch up to the times and force these changes – but because it’s the right way to do business.
