Howdie do TurnKey lovers,

How long has it been? Feels like it’s been ages due to so many new and exciting things happening here at Turnkey Internet! Do you remember when I wrote you the post about progress? The main take away from the article was that progress is progress. Big or small, as long as you’re progressing forward, you will eventually reach your goals.

Well, this has been a very progressive few weeks here at Turnkey Internet. So much so, that every time I walk into the data center, I get a bit of a shocked or surprised look. Why you may ask? Well, we’ve begun receiving parts in for Pod 2. I’m sure you’ve heard about it in earlier posts, but this dream is getting closer to becoming a reality. I mean, it wasn’t too long ago that I remember putting up walls in our data center. I helped to program the switches for each core while watching our senior data center engineer wire all of the racks together. It sometimes feels that it was just last week, but then I think back on all of the progress we’ve made since then. Acquiring Kcnet and bringing on new staff. However, none of this even comes close to the feeling I receive when I walk into our data center and see the foundation of Pod 2 beginning to spring to life. It’s a very exciting, stressful and rewarding time around TurnKey right now. So much hard work from so many people is helping to make this dream of being the best damn data center in the Northeast a reality!

I just feel very fortunate and bless to work here at TurnKey Internet. Sure, there are times that I just want to scream at the top of my lungs (which I do) due to working on a bug/program/technical support matter for hours with very little progress, but once you achieve that goal, it’s very rewarding. It’s one of the best feelings in the world. Now to see that on a much larger scale with new parts being delivered for Pod 2 and vine videos being made on Pod 2, is just very satisfying. I can’t wait until all the parts get here and Pod 2 is fully online.

Inching one Pod closer to getting our data center maxed out with Pods full of servers.

Well, I just wanted to share that with you guys. To share the joy and excitement that I have for this wonderful company!

Until next time.

If you’ve been hanging around the TurnKey data center for the past week, you’d be sure to hear a lot of “It’s here! It’s here! It’s here!” Why? Because TurnKey Internet has been receiving shipments of brand new servers and most importantly, the pieces to build Pod 2!

WAAAAY faster than expected, our data center will expand by over 20% and within the next 30 days we expect Pod 2 to be up and running. We’re using the same high-tech, green, environmentally conscious technology but on a larger scale. Trust us when we say- This is still just the beginning!

Not following us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram yet? Well we got you covered (but you should still go do that!). Check out some photos below and get caught up.

hash_tag_image

By now, most of us know what hashtags look like. We may not know exactly what they do, but if you’re on social media, you’ve most certainly seen a hashtag. Or, at least, now you have.
The hashtag functions as a simple way to share content. When a hashtag is used, keywords or phrases become searchable for other users of the same social network, such as Twitter, Instagram, and now Facebook.  You can “hashtag” a word, phrase, person, event, or… really anything you want.  For example, on Twitter, during the past NBA Finals games, I “tweeted”, “yo mama’s as ugly as a Tim Duncan fast break #nbafinals.” Now, anyone who is searching #nbafinals on Twitter can see what I, among thousands of others, was saying before the Heat (unfortunately) won their second title with LeBron. Here is a little background info:

It’s an easy concept as well as a great tool.  It allows users to see what other people are talking about and/or to see what is trending around the world in general. Until now, Facebook had yet to incorporate hashtags into their site. So, what took them so long?

Did they not want to succumb to Twitter’s brilliant idea? Is it a privacy issue? Is everyone who works at Facebook stuck in a Zuckerberg Colony in Silicon Valley where The Zuck, himself, shields his employees from any other form of social communication?!

I’m not sure, but it’s here now and we will just have to wait to see if it’s here to stay!

Your friend,

#Dylan

An Angry Bird attacks TurnKey Internet’s super secure data center:   2 comments

Posted at Jun 18, 2013 @ 2:57pm New York Datacenter,News,Story Time at TurnKey

BirdAt approximately 12:53PM on June 18, 2013, a cardinal was captured on security film trying to break into TurnKey Internet’s highly secure, green data center in New York’s Tech Valley Region.

Neighbors called in after tweets (audible, non-Twitter) were heard at the Latham data center. Luckily, TurnKey Internet’s facility contains a state-of-the-art security system that safeguards their SSAE-16 Type 2 certified building.

“The bird just swooped in, tried to knock over all the security cameras so he could sneak inside! Then realized how secure the buildin’ was,” local resident Emily Wegener said of the incident. “He flew away and disappeared in some bush-tower-tree-thing and I never done seen that creature again!”

The bird stands about three inches in height, is red in color and has a white belly. The culprit was last seen fleeing the scene to a nearby maple tree. If you have seen this bird, have any additional information, or have any suggestions for when birds attack, please contact your local authorities or email birdpatrol@turnkeyinternet.net.

We are TurnKey Internet, and we are Energy Stars   2 comments

Posted at May 24, 2013 @ 12:01pm Announcement,green,New York Datacenter,News

energystar-hiresMore big news, more exciting news, more green news!

We are thrilled to announce that our green data center in Latham, NY has been named an ENERGY STAR® certified data center by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This is no small feat, everyone. Since the day we opened our doors at this facility, we have been undergoing an energy efficiency audit. That’s 12 long months’ worth of reviews, inspections, assessments, etc.—I’m sure you get the idea. Finally, the process has reached its end, and we are officially an ENERGY STAR® certified data center!

There are several requirements for an ENERGY STAR® certification. A commercial facility must use an average of 35% less energy than traditional facilities, and release 35% less CO2 into the atmosphere. Not to toot our own horn, but—OK, to toot our own horn really loud and aggressively—with our zero carbon footprint, we’ve actually surpassed the EPA requirements to become an ENERGY STAR® certified data center… and pretty significantly, at that.

Another reason we are so excited about this accomplishment is that we are one of only two ENERGY STAR® certified data centers in the entirety of New York State! New York is ENORMOUS. There are loads of data centers in New York. We are also one of less than 50 in the entire US! 39 data centers are ENERGY STAR® certified, to be exact. That averages less than 1 ENERGY STAR® certified data center per state. This sets the bar pretty high… if we do say so ourselves (and we do).

Here’s what Adam, the man on top, had to say:

“We are delighted to have completed the ENERGY STAR® certification process. Through the ultra-efficient design of our data center and our use of green renewable energy, TurnKey has catapulted past the industry standard. We are one of only two data centers in the entire state of New York that has received this exclusive certification from the EPA. Since data centers are expected to be larger polluters than the airline industry by 2020, I can confidently say that TurnKey Internet is among the best of the best for energy efficiency in the data center space.”

This year has been packed full of exciting news like this, and it’s not even June yet! From our SSAE 16 Type 2 certification in February, to our ReCharge New York installation last month, across everything in between, our fingers are crossed in hopes that the trend continues!

News from the social scene – Yahoo! acquires Tumblr   no comments

Posted at May 20, 2013 @ 1:16pm News,online marketing,social media

YahooTumblrLogos-617x416Just a friendly update from the social side of TurnKey Internet: Yahoo! has acquired Tumblr! If you’re unfamiliar with either, wake up. Just kidding (kind of). Yahoo! is an Internet corporation best known for its web portal and search engine, and Tumblr is a multimedia microblogging and social networking site.

These days, alliances and acquisitions are forming between prominent Internet sites faster than you can say “prominent Internet sites”. We’ve mentioned a few of them on the TurnKey blog before, like in my tirade about Instagram’s policy changes following Facebook’s billion-dollar buy-out, for example. I still think that was so uncool, but I’ll leave it at that… for today.

Speaking of billions of dollars, Yahoo! purchased Tumblr for $1.1 billion… in cash! I wonder which lucky Yahoo! employee was given the task of making that truckload of bills rain all over the Tumblr team. That probably didn’t happen, but maybe it did, and this is my article.

To give you a snapshot of the information that I’ve dug up in my webscapades (did you like that?), apparently Tumblr will remain its own entity, as a separate business, independently-owned and operated. The deal is being spoken of in an almost partner-like manner, with mentioned plans of integrating search functions into the microblog as a means to surf its content more easily.

I think it was pretty smart of Yahoo! to shell out the big bucks and scoop up Tumblr. Let’s just hope they keep their very public promise to “not screw it up”. I wonder what that was a reference to…

Anyway, I’ll keep this article short and sweet, and leave you with one final bit of cliff-hanging wisdom: When are we going to start mashing up company names like we do with celebrity couples these days? Facebingagram, AndroogleTube, Twittine… and now Yahumblr? How catchy! We’re wasting so much of our valuable time with all of these unnecessary letters and syllables.

Faster is better, and the TurnKey High-Speed Stock Trader Desktop line is both   1 comment

Posted at May 16, 2013 @ 1:01pm Announcement,New Product/Service,News,Web hosting

fasterisbetterWe have news, everyone! A new product release! We just introduced our ultra-fast, super-advanced line of TurnKey Internet Virtual Private Servers, and we couldn’t be more excited. Really, this kind of thing makes us all go a little overboard in the zeal and enthusiasm department, but, hey—worse things could happen.

Have you seen those hilarious “It’s Not Complicated” AT&T commercials that have been all over the place recently? Now that DVR is a thing, I generally try to skip commercials—shh, don’t tell—but if I see that one of those commercials is on, it’s likely that I’ll stop fast-forwarding in the interest of a guaranteed laugh. For those of you who haven’t seen these commercials, check out AT&T’s YouTube Channel. There are quite a few of them, and they are all really well-done and funny.

Aside from entertainment value, our High-Speed Stock Trader Desktop VPS release is the reason I’m bringing these commercials to your attention. This one, in particular, really hits the nail on the head.

It really is a no-brainer. It’s not complicated. In the tech world, faster is better, period, and that is why our new High-Speed VPS’s are, simply, a better option.

TurnKey High-SpeedVPS’s take the virtual private server experience to a whole new level. Why? How? Let me rattle off a few reasons for you.

  • Our TurnKey High-Speed VPS’s contain solid state drive (SSD) disks, which have crazy-fast input/output speeds; much faster than traditional disks. Traditional disks are rotational, and SSD’s have no moving parts at all. They run solely on flash memory. No movement = faster. You got it? Good.
  • At the core of the TurnKey High-Speed VPS is Intel’s® new Xeon MP X7550 2 GHz Octa-Core CPU. This can increase speeds up to four times that of a Quad-Core.
  • The TurnKey High-Speed VPS allows for one hundred thousand IOPS (input/output per second) per drive, due to the combination of these SSD disks and the Octa-Core technology. Talk about TEAMWORK.
  • The TurnKey High-Speed VPS has the most innovative, highest-performing node configuration on the market There are multiple SSD disks and multiple Octa-Core CPU’s in each (node), configured in RAID-10, using high-performance RAID cards with significant on-board caching capabilities. This is a revolutionary alternative to the other VPS options out there. See? Like your mom’s car, cheetahs, and space ships, virtual private servers are better when they are faster, and it’s not complicated to see why. Check out our High-Speed VPS page. You’ll see what I mean.

TurnKey Internet reaches zero carbon footprint and 100% renewable power resources   no comments

img-hydro2-bigRemember when I told you that April is Earth Month at TurnKey Internet? Well, I’m back with some very exciting Earth Month news. Two different pieces of Earth Month news, actually–both green; both awesome.

First of all, we are now part of NYS Gov. Cuomo’s ReCharge New York program. Do you know what this means? DO YOU KNOW WHAT THIS MEANS?! This means that TurnKey Internet is now powered by 100% renewable resources! Being awarded this system means a lot to us, and it should mean a lot to you too, because being nice to the Earth should mean a lot to everybody. This hydroelectric power system draws energy directly from Niagara Falls, and extends the portion of our power that we were already drawing from renewable sources to a full 100%.

We were selected for the ReCharge New York installation in recognition of the jobs we are creating in New York State as TurnKey Internet expands. Here’s a fun fact: We have more than doubled our staff in the past two years. Isn’t that crazy? Crazy in the best way possible, of course.

Do you know what else this ReCharge New York system means for us? I told you there were two pieces of Earth Month news, didn’t I? Get ready, I saved the best for last… If you haven’t yet heard, or are impartial to reading titles and/or press releases, our Latham, NY data center now has a zero carbon footprint! This accomplishment is all but unheard of in our industry, so we’re more than a little proud and excited. We feel, and hope you agree, that this accomplishment really sets us apart from the other guys.

If you’re interested in a little more light reading, you can find the press release in our Company News section.

Pssst… Between you and me, we are  running an OUTRAGEOUS sale right now. If you’re interested–and I would recommend being interested–jump on Live Sales Chat. Our Sales Department will tell you what’s up. *cough–HUGE DISCOUNT–cough* …excuse me.

CyberBunker vs. Spamhaus becomes CyberBunker vs. Internet   2 comments

Posted at Mar 27, 2013 @ 4:03pm News,tech news

Piracy Attack Key

If you are reading this article, chances are good that you have not been affected by what some are calling the “biggest attack ever” on the Internet… That, or you really like our blog and decided to wait for this page to load. Either way, let me tell you a little bit about what is happening!

According to sources such as The BBC and The New York Times, between March 15th and the 19th, a Dutch online hosting company, CyberBunker, began an all-out cyber-attack. This has affected the speed of the Internet for people globally. The attack began on Geneva-based spam-fighting group, Spamhaus, because of a supposed “black-listing”, and has even reached the United States.

CyberBunker, who is known for hosting anything that is not “child porn or terrorism-related,” was apparently added to Spamhaus’ list of companies who are said to distribute “spam”, in a wide variety of different ways, shapes, and forms. Because of CyberBunker’s lenient terms of services, Spamhaus believes that entities are able to flood the Internet with spam, without much difficulty.

CyberBunker—who, interestingly enough, is based out of an old military warfare bunker—retaliated with a Distributed Denial of Service, or a DDoS,  and has flooded tons of traffic to Spamhaus’s Domain Name System (DNS). A DNS links websites’ domain names with their IP addresses, and while the attack is flooding their system, websites are globally becoming increasingly slow to get to. It has been said that these attacks have reached up to 300 GB per second, while most major attacks have been around 50 GB per second.

Netflix has seemed to be the largest company affected by this attack, but the Internet in general may be a little bit slower, mainly in Europe. While Spamhaus has over 80 servers all around the world, they have been able to fight this attack with the help of a few other companies—One of whom is Google, actually.  While this is certainly not the end of the Internet, it has been the largest DDoS attack ever reported, and an issue that may become more of a concern to many large companies moving forward.
