What Makes a Green Data Center Green?   no comments

Posted at Apr 4, 2023 @ 9:00am data center

It shouldn’t come as a surprise when I tell you that we humans haven’t been too kind to Mother Nature lately.  In fact, it seems that every time you open the newspaper or turn on your TV, there is a new fact or statistic telling us all how we are destroying our planet. And it’s not just you and me. It’s the sum of our everyday, first world amenities that may be slowly taking a toll on the rest of the plant. The airline and automobile industries, the pharmaceutical industry and businesses involved with fertilizers are just a few things we take for granted that could possibly be hurting us more than helping.

But while over 7 billion people roam the Earth, many of us, are slowly becoming more conscious on the effect we are having on our planet. Here at TurnKey Internet, we realize the effects data centers can have on the environment as well. Ever since we established our company, we’ve been taking large strides to make our data center as green as possible.

But how can you make a data center green? And what does it take? Well, let us tell you!

We’ll start from the outside. If you drive up to our data center, you may not notice one of our coolest and biggest features that make us so green.  We have an advanced on-site solar array that provides clean, pollution-free power that covers our entire roof!

solar panel 3

As we head inside, you probably wouldn’t notice something else that would be right in front of your face. The lights! You know those little energy saving lights you buy for your home? Well imagine if you could bring them to work with you, replace those awful florescent lights, and save money while using a lot less energy.

Next, we head into the data center. If you have been in a data center before, then you might notice something drastically different about ours. Well we call them “pods” or to be more specific, state-of-the-art Smart Aisle Cold Containment Pods. These awesome things use a fraction of the amount of energy typically used in a data center by using in-row precision spot cooling. This spot cooling works with in-rack temperature sensors that regulates the climate and keeps the servers at an optimal temperature.

Finally, another great feature at our data center is that we receive hydroelectric power for New York’s Niagara Falls, thanks to the ReCharge New York program.

That’s right. Those beautiful falls are helping us become one of the most energy-efficient data centers around. Because here at TurnKey we mean business… and we mean green!

TurnKey Internet Celebrates Earth Day 2018 with New Green Awards & Awareness   no comments

Posted at Apr 17, 2018 @ 9:00am Press Release

TurnKey Internet Green Data Center

LATHAM, NEW YORK (April 17, 2018) – To celebrate Earth Day, leading Data Center and Cloud Hosting Solutions provider TurnKey Internet, Inc. announced today that it has been awarded and certified by the Green Business Bureau™ and Green America™ for its green initiatives and commitment to the environment. TurnKey Internet’s green data center utilizes state-of-the-art technology and 100% renewable energy to provide the greenest cloud-based IT services for clients all over the world. In anticipation of Earth Day, April 22nd, TurnKey Internet plans to amplify awareness for their low-energy, low-impact IT solutions.

TurnKey Internet will run an Earth Day promotion for the entirety of April to honor their commitment to the environment. Their New York data center offers revolutionary green IT solutions, such as employing low-voltage servers stored in ultra-efficient cold containment pods in each section of their data center. These pods deliver precision spot-cooling to temperature-regulated server racks, which use thirty-three percent less energy than traditional data centers.

TurnKey Internet runs their Energy Star certified facility with 100% renewable hydro and solar power. Their state-of the art data center is equipped with on-site, rooftop solar panels, and uses hydro-power from Niagara Falls to further supplement their renewable energy initiatives as beneficiaries of Gov. Cuomo’s “Recharge New York” power program. In 2013, The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation awarded TurnKey Internet the Environmental Excellence Award in recognition of their innovative data center design and outstanding commitment to environmental sustainability, social responsibility and economic viability.

“The future of both the Cloud Industry and the IT world in general revolve around energy—generating it from renewable resources and consuming it efficiently,” said Adam Wills, CEO of TurnKey Internet. He continued to say, “TurnKey’s green data center was built with sustainability in mind, and our commitment only evolves as the world-wide demand for energy consumption continues to multiply.”

While maintaining their high-level energy-efficient data center, TurnKey Internet looks forward to Earth Day to emphasize that all it takes to merge technology and the environment is a little bit of corporate responsibility.

Earth Day Means Thinking about the Earth and being Green Every Day   no comments

Posted at May 8, 2014 @ 10:49am green,Web hosting

turnkey internet greend datacenterHowdie do Turnkey lovers,

Do you ladies and gentleman know what Tuesday, April 22nd 2014 is all about? Don’t worry, you don’t have to pull out your almanac or open Google to find what’s so special about, Tuesday, April 22nd 2014. The day was EARTH DAYYYYY!!!! Ok, you may not be as excited as I am about Earth day, but it’s a day that is lauded as the day for the environment.  This could be going out to help with cleaning up an old playground or maybe picking up trash on the side of the road. Literally, anything that is good for the environment is appreciated on this day. Hey, you may even find your garbage man may have a little bit of pep to his or her step.

Ok, ok that may be a bit overboard about the garbage man, but it is a day where support for environmental protection is at an all time high. Now, you may be saying, “This is a webhosting company, why do they care about Earth Day?” Well my friend, almost every day at Turnkey Internet is some form of Earth day. How? How can everyday at Turnkey Internet be a version of Earth day? Well to answer that question, I  must first ask a question back to you

  1. Do you have electricity in your home/workplace that you used to view this post ?

Those are pretty straightforward questions, right? They may even seem redundant as since you’re reading this post, you should have some form of electricity powering the machine you’re viewing this post on and more than likely, that machine is a desktop or laptop. You may be saying, “Yea, so what? What does this have to do with EarthDay and Turnkey Internet?”

That form of electricity is more than likely from a fossil fuel. What exactly is a fossil fuel? A fossil fuel is a fuel that is formed by natural processes such as coal. Using these type of fuels can lead to all sort of environmental issues such as Greenhouse gases being released into the environment. These gases can result in harmful effects to the environment and the people within it which results in a higher carbon footprint. You can read more about forms of electricity and fossil fuels here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fossil-fuel_power_station

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fossil_fuel

The reason I’m even mentioning this is because technology has reached a point in time where different forms of electricity can be created. These different forms can be any of the following listed below and many others:

  1. Solar power – converting energy from the sun to electricity
  2. Hydroelectric Power – Converting energy from water to electricity

Now both of these forms of power conversion each have their pros and cons, but they also have one thing in common: a zero carbon footprint. What exactly is a zero carbon footprint? The Zero Carbon Footprint is the measure of the amount of green house gases produced by burning fossil fuels. The higher the footprint, the worse for the environment. How does this factor into Turnkey Internet? Well, we utilize both, solar power and hydroelectric power, within our datacenter.

On top of our building, we have many different solar panels that convert solar energy directly to electric power to power the datacenter, but not only that, we also receive power from Niagara Falls that directly power the datacenter as well.

That means that our datacenter currently has a zero-carbon footprint which is the most effective way to ensure you leave a good mark on the environment. Every day when I walk into work and look at our datacenter, it makes me proud to know that we’re not damaging the environment. That we are helping to sustain the environment  by using outside of the box methods to power the AWESOME datacenter that is Turnkey Internet.

You can read more about our forms of power at:

http://turnkeyinternet.net/green-initiative/

Since it’s Earth Day, I wanted to bring light to the effectiveness on our power consumption at Turnkey Internet.

Until next time

[Press Release] – TurnKey Internet, Inc. expands footprint to New York City   no comments

cranedayLATHAM, NEW YORK (September 18, 2013) – Sustainable IT solutions provider TurnKey Internet, Inc. announced today the completion of their fiber optic interconnection to New York City’s global communication hub, 60 Hudson. The addition of the new, direct fiber optic connection, allows TurnKey Internet to enhance their network redundancy and to further expand their high-speed connections worldwide. TurnKey Internet’s SSAE-16 certified data center, located in New York’s Tech Valley, gives the green IT solutions company increased connection to clients across the country and around the globe.

“By placing direct fiber-optic connectivity to 60 Hudson from our Latham, New York data center, we have expanded both our capacity and redundancy that we provide for our customers.” TurnKey Internet’s CEO, Adam Wills, said. “With the expansion of our data center earlier last month, we have had increased demands and requests for additional network capacity. Whether they are in the stock-trading industry, the ecommerce industry, or if they work with customers around the world, this expansion of our footprint will guarantee our clients the highest performance available.”

60 Hudson, located in lower Manhattan, New York, has been the center of telecommunications across the globe for over 80 years. Opened in the 1930’s, 60 Hudson has since become one of the primary Internet traffic hubs around the world and has expanded into a colocation center, now housing over 100 companies. TurnKey Internet’s new direct fiber optic access to this location allows for increased connectivity, speed and redundancy to amplify their global network presence.

Featured Client – Darren Cain   no comments

Posted at Sep 17, 2013 @ 3:15pm customer service,green,News

TKSpotlight_CotM_DarrenCainLast month, we introduced our first “Featured Client”, Nick. If you didn’t get to check that out, Nick runs a Web/WordPress Development Studio (called W5 Web Designs) that specializes in small to medium-sized business site development. Here at TurnKey, we appreciate each and every one of you TurnKey Turkey’s (hmm… that’s catchy)!  To show our appreciation, we like to highlight a client and give our friends in the World Wide Web a little background on what they do.  Nick was nice enough to give us a TON of info about his business, how he’s enjoys being with TurnKey, and even sent in a great photo of his family!

This time around we have our mate Darren who is from across the pond. And without further ado, here is a little info on our new Featured Client!

Darren is the founder and CEO at Torpix Network in Oxfordshire, United Kingdom. While studying Media at college, he found a passion to work with computers and eventually became a computer technician in the UK. Four years ago, Darren began Torpix Network and offered IT services as a hobby. Since then, Torpix has turned into an active business.

Darren began as a reseller with TurnKey and has, within two years, upgraded to running his company on dedicated servers from our green data center in Latham, New York. “TurnKey has an excellent, true, 100% uptime,” Darren said. “They seem to never have any downtime, and if there has been, I’ve never noticed. When there is an issue either if it was my fault or a network issue, they go above and beyond the call of duty to resolve it, even though my services with them are self-managed.”

Aww shucks! Thanks, Darren.

If you want to learn more about Torpix Network, go check them out! If you want to be the next Featured Client, email dyoungs@turnkeyinternet.net or let us know on our Facebook or Twitter.

As the World Turn(Key)s   no comments

Jareddd

Hey there!

In case you don’t recognize me, I’m Jared – the long-standing (over a year) intern at TurnKey Internet.   You may be asking yourself “How has he been an intern for more than a year at this crazy cool place?” and the answer is that school happened.  I recently graduated from the Rochester Institute of Technology, and I started this internship a year ago as a part of my graduation requirements.  Since the start I have been getting some hours in on school breaks and whatnot, working towards my degree in New Media Interactive Development.

So what do I do here at “The Turns?” (it’s a little thing I call the company… in my head.  Actually I made that up just now as I was writing…  this is why they don’t let me touch the copywriting.  That, and because my first attempt at writing this blog turned into a creative writing piece detailing a false backstory for myself set in a distant galaxy).  Anyway, I do tons of stuff!  Some of you may have had the undisputed pleasure of talking to me on the phone, but most importantly I’m heavily involved in the graphic design projects here.  You can see some of my work proudly displayed on our Facebook page, in your mail (physical), in your mail (digital), around the office, in our Vines, and well just about anywhere in our digital domain.  I’m also the person currently responsible for transforming Dylan’s Neanderthal gibberish into legible content, so you’re all welcome for that.

In other news, great things are on the horizon for The Turns, and here are some things you should keep a look-out for:

High Speed Stock Trader Desktop: Manage your stocks with the beauty and speed of the top-of-the-line stock programs rolled into one.

– Holiday Specials:  The holidays will hit before you know it.  Keep a close eye on your inboxes!

The TurnKey Pod Project:  We’ll be revealing more footage and content from the addition of our newest pod.

That’s all I have for you today!  Maybe we’ll see each other again soon, TK Bloggerites.

TurnKey Internet, Inc. Begins Data Center Expansion in New York’s Tech Valley   no comments

cranedayLATHAM, NEW YORK (July 31, 2013) – Sustainable IT solutions provider TurnKey Internet, Inc. announced today the expansion of their Latham, New York data center. Just 15 months after opening their flagship data center, TurnKey Internet will be installing their next phase of additional equipment, floor space and staffing to further develop their high-tech, cloud-based infrastructure. This comes in part from their funding received from New York’s energy development fund – NYSERDA.

“Because of the distinctive design within our green and sustainable data center- located in the heart of New York’s Tech Valley- we have seen exponential growth and non-stop demand for the expansion within our facility and with our cloud-based services,” said CEO, Adam Wills. “We’re excited to announce that we are ahead of schedule with our expansion and that this will allow us to increase our facility’s total capacity by 50 percent.”

Using equipment like their cold-containment pods, which uses the highly energy-efficient SmartAisle™ technology, TurnKey Internet has proved to be a leader in green-IT. In the past year, they teamed up with Energy Star and became one of two Energy Star certified data centers in the state of New York. TurnKey Internet was also approved to be a part of the ReCharge New York program in March 2013. The program, created by New York’s Governor Cuomo, was set in place to help companies receive clean, hydroelectric energy. With the use of their green-technology, their solar-panel roof system, and the hydroelectric power, TurnKey Internet’s data center uses 100% renewable energy.

Howdie do TurnKey lovers,

How long has it been? Feels like it’s been ages due to so many new and exciting things happening here at Turnkey Internet! Do you remember when I wrote you the post about progress? The main take away from the article was that progress is progress. Big or small, as long as you’re progressing forward, you will eventually reach your goals.

Well, this has been a very progressive few weeks here at Turnkey Internet. So much so, that every time I walk into the data center, I get a bit of a shocked or surprised look. Why you may ask? Well, we’ve begun receiving parts in for Pod 2. I’m sure you’ve heard about it in earlier posts, but this dream is getting closer to becoming a reality. I mean, it wasn’t too long ago that I remember putting up walls in our data center. I helped to program the switches for each core while watching our senior data center engineer wire all of the racks together. It sometimes feels that it was just last week, but then I think back on all of the progress we’ve made since then. Acquiring Kcnet and bringing on new staff. However, none of this even comes close to the feeling I receive when I walk into our data center and see the foundation of Pod 2 beginning to spring to life. It’s a very exciting, stressful and rewarding time around TurnKey right now. So much hard work from so many people is helping to make this dream of being the best damn data center in the Northeast a reality!

I just feel very fortunate and bless to work here at TurnKey Internet. Sure, there are times that I just want to scream at the top of my lungs (which I do) due to working on a bug/program/technical support matter for hours with very little progress, but once you achieve that goal, it’s very rewarding. It’s one of the best feelings in the world. Now to see that on a much larger scale with new parts being delivered for Pod 2 and vine videos being made on Pod 2, is just very satisfying. I can’t wait until all the parts get here and Pod 2 is fully online.

Inching one Pod closer to getting our data center maxed out with Pods full of servers.

Well, I just wanted to share that with you guys. To share the joy and excitement that I have for this wonderful company!

Until next time.
