No not Pokemon, teenage bugs are attacking your website server   no comments

Posted at Jul 26, 2016 @ 9:36am Web hosting

httpoxyblogimagepokemon

Unfortunately, despite the trend, the bugs I’m referring to are not Pokemon.

Instead, they’re easily exploitable security bugs, discovered 15 years ago, that have reemerged, leaving your website or server potentially open to hijackers.

It’s being called the “httpoxy flaw” and it exists in a variety of server software, including PHP, Go, Apache HTTP server, Apache TomCat, and Python. If exploited, it can potentially be used to seize control of your website and access sensitive data.

Httpoxy is a set of vulnerabilities that affect applications running in CGI, or CGI-like environments. Essentially it comes down to a simple namespace conflict. This, in turn, can be exploited to configure outgoing proxies, allowing attackers to remotely execute malicious code.

Red Hat, Microsoft, The Apache Software Foundation, Ngnix, CloudFlare and others have released security advisories in an attempt to warn users of the httpoxy flaw.

Based on the affected software, specific CVE (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures) numbers have been assigned: CVE-2016-5385 in PHP; CVE-2016-5386 in Go; CVE-2016-5387 in Apache HTTP server; CVE-2016-5388 in Apache TomCat; CVE-2016-1000109 in PHP-engine HHVM; and CVE-2016-1000110 in Python. Researches expect more CVEs coming for httpoxy as less common software is inspected.

Luckily if your website is hosted on TurnKey Internet’s cloud hosting platform (https://turnkeyinternet.net/linux-cpanel-web-hosting/) you are already protected. If you have any questions or additional concerns, feel free to email our support team (helpdesk@turnkeyinternet.net) and we would be more than happy to assist you.

No April Fools – World Backup Day Was March 31st   no comments

Posted at Apr 1, 2015 @ 12:01am backup

worldbackupday1You know, one thing that has become apparent about March is that a lot of  people celebrate birthdays. It seems everyday that I login to Facebook  there is another 8 people born on the same day. I don’t think I can recall  any other month has as many celebrations as  this past March, however, for  this post, we will be talking about one day in particular, March 31st.

Besides being the last day of the month, this day has a particular meaning  to it. Quick, what is the most important commodity of your business?  Anybody? No? Your data. This data could be anything from accounting records  to credit card numbers, tax records, phone numbers or even a Facebook calendar with  everyones’ birthday. Your data is among the most important commodities to your company. We all know this, but yet, why do so many of us  fail to protect our data?

You may  be saying, ‘I protect my data. I have a firewall!!!’ That’s not  the type of protection that I’m referring to and as any reader of this blog  knows, I best illustrate by providing examples. So, lets say you had been  working on a project for months. You had spent hours in development.  Tinkering until the site was the exact setup you want and then, BAM,  diaster strikes. Your hard drive dies and you lose all of your work. How  could this of been prevented? Backups, which brings us to the importance of  March 31st.

You see, March 31st is the World Backup Day. No, it’s not an offically  holiday, but that doesn’t diminish the importance on the day. We all have  data that is very important to us. This data takes many forms and if we  lost it, could greatly affect our businesses. World Backup Day, March 31st,  is a day set to remind us to backup our data. If you haven’t already, why  not? Have you seen the backup options over at turnkeyvault.com? Something  to fit everyones situation.

So April 1st comes around, with March now in the rear view mirror – and people shout April Fools – but if you don’t want to be the subject of a tragic April Fools day gone bad we hope you took a moment to make sure you business has a backup plan, and that its working.  Every year we replace computers, servers, laptops and more – so its easy to forget to make sure each new device is being backed up – but March 31st is a great day to remind yourself each year to double check them all in your office.

Net Neutrality – If It Isn’t broken, don’t fix it! Part II   no comments

Posted at Jan 22, 2015 @ 7:18am Ask the Expert

netneutralityIf you haven’t read Part I you can do so at https://blog.turnkeyinternet.net/ask-the-expert/net-neutrality-if-it-isnt-broken-dont-fix-it/

Let’s touch on traffic prioritization.  What’s one of the easiest things to delay in order to prioritize other traffic?  Email.  After all, email doesn’t need to stream all at once like a song or a movie so it seems like the easiest thing to delay while prioritizing other traffic.  Now, suppose that email is queued up all day long until, say, 3am in the morning when traffic flow is at its lowest.  At 3am, these email servers begin sending all the emails they’ve queued up all day long.  No problem, right?  Heck, it’s only email.  Hmm, suppose you emailed that signed contract for the proposal and it had to be accepted by 5pm the day before but your email got queued up in order to make way for traffic that had been prioritized over the delivery of your email.  Are you beginning to see where this is going?

People have been using applications like twitter to instantly reach multiple people at the same time.  Suppose a town is under siege by a group that is trying to take over the town.  Suppose those town folks are alerting other family members and friends about the invading troops’ whereabouts so they can keep their loved ones out of harm’s way.  For the sake of argument, let’s say that twitter does not pay traffic carriers extra money to prioritize their traffic.  What happens now?  If your home is about to be invaded in five minutes and the message warning you of the impending invasion is not sent to you until 15 or 20 minutes later – it’s too late.  I know this is an extreme example but prioritizing traffic could actually become a matter of life and death.

President Obama embraced, almost exactly, the comments I posted on the FCC website concerning this matter.  In fact, what he is proposing is so close to my comments that I’m sure they must have been passed along to him.  In short, my comments were to keep internet traffic neutral – nobody’s traffic gets prioritized.  If you are a content provider and you want your traffic prioritized, then setup your own network and allow people to buy bandwidth directly from you and only your content is delivered over your private bandwidth.  The issue is though, it’s not the content providers who are causing the ruckus, it is the traffic carriers who have brought this whole issue about.

Where President Obama strayed from my comments was in recommending that the internet become regulated as a utility such as the phone companies.  Let me just say this… “Dear God, save us all.”  I used to own a VoIP company and the myriad of taxes, fees and surcharges on phone service staggers the mind.  Do NOT let this happen to internet services.  Basically 31%-35% of your phone bill is comprised of taxes, fees and surcharges.  The FCC says that it wants to regulate Internet companies under Title II so they can control it.  I guess they (the FCC) hasn’t figured out that they already regulate the internet and VoIP – no Title II regulations are needed.

I say that the content providers should not be charged just because people want to download data from them.  The charge for providing end users for the bandwidth they need, should come from the traffic carrier.  This would be a good thing because once the price of a traffic carrier gets too high, someone will step in with a less costly way to provide bandwidth.  It’s called good old fashioned competition.  The traffic carriers want to make the content providers look like the bad guys.  And, as if that isn’t bad enough, the traffic carriers are already double-dipping on the profits.  Anyone who is younger than 35 or perhaps 40, may not remember the days of completely free TV.  TV was free because the networks made their money from the advertising space that they sold.  Then along comes cable companies that charge end users a monthly fee for TV shows AND they are collecting all the revenues from the advertisers – man, talk about a cash cow – they’re getting paid on both sides and now they want to charge content providers too?????  Are you serious??  And remember, the content providers are already paying their hosting company for all the bandwidth they need.  Why should they have to pay again?  The traffic carriers have oversubscribed their networks and that is a problem solely created and owned by the traffic carriers, and the content providers should not be held responsible for the traffic carriers problem.  Let me offer an analogy .  Let’s use a different scenario where there are three parties in the same roles:

  1. City water department – aka content provider (they provide water)
  2. Building contractor who builds houses on a huge tract of land she/he owns – aka traffic carrier
  3. End user – you and me who have bought homes from the building contractor

We purchased our homes and the contractor guarantees us 5 gallons per minute of water flow.  The contractor runs a six-inch main to serve the housing development.  The building contractor builds just enough homes so that the water flow to each house is 5 gallons per minute.  The problem is, the building contractor wants to make more money and so they overbuild the development and the water flow is now reduced to 2 gallons per minute just because there are too many homes using water at any given time.  So, the building contractor turns around and decides to charge the city water department a fee to prioritize water flow to certain homes, which of course will reduce water flow even further to homes that do not receive prioritized water flow.  The problem is not the city water department.  The city water department has more than enough capacity to serve all the homes in the development with 5 gallons per minute.  The problem is that the building contractor only put a six-inch main in and what is needed is a twentyfour-inch main.  This is not a home owner created problem nor is it a city water department created problem, the problem is the building contractor did not put in a large enough main pipe to feed all the customers.  And that is exactly what is happening with the flow of traffic on the internet.  The traffic carriers (building contractor) do not have the capacity to give the end users (home owners) all the bandwidth (water flow) that they guaranteed and the traffic carriers (building contractors) are turning around and charging the content providers (city water departments) a fee to prioritize their content (water flow).  The building contractors (traffic carriers) want to make the reduced water flow (bandwidth) appear to be a problem caused by the city water department (content provider).  And that is just not the case.

A peripheral but related issue here is the maddening amount of video and audio content that is displayed on websites.  How many times have you gone to a website and an advertisement begins to automatically play?  Also, how many times do you visit a site and want to read the story but there is no text, just a video?  That drives me nuts.  All I want to do is read the story, I do not want to watch a video.  Sorry, I’m going off on a tangent.

Let’s reiterate:

  1. Leave the internet as it is
  2. Do not regulate it like telephone companies are regulated unless you want to see prices increase due to fees, taxes and surcharges
  3. Leave the FCC in charge of the internet and VoIP

End of story, it truly IS that simple.

Earth Day Means Thinking about the Earth and being Green Every Day   no comments

Posted at May 8, 2014 @ 10:49am green,Web hosting

turnkey internet greend datacenterHowdie do Turnkey lovers,

Do you ladies and gentleman know what Tuesday, April 22nd 2014 is all about? Don’t worry, you don’t have to pull out your almanac or open Google to find what’s so special about, Tuesday, April 22nd 2014. The day was EARTH DAYYYYY!!!! Ok, you may not be as excited as I am about Earth day, but it’s a day that is lauded as the day for the environment.  This could be going out to help with cleaning up an old playground or maybe picking up trash on the side of the road. Literally, anything that is good for the environment is appreciated on this day. Hey, you may even find your garbage man may have a little bit of pep to his or her step.

Ok, ok that may be a bit overboard about the garbage man, but it is a day where support for environmental protection is at an all time high. Now, you may be saying, “This is a webhosting company, why do they care about Earth Day?” Well my friend, almost every day at Turnkey Internet is some form of Earth day. How? How can everyday at Turnkey Internet be a version of Earth day? Well to answer that question, I  must first ask a question back to you

  1. Do you have electricity in your home/workplace that you used to view this post ?

Those are pretty straightforward questions, right? They may even seem redundant as since you’re reading this post, you should have some form of electricity powering the machine you’re viewing this post on and more than likely, that machine is a desktop or laptop. You may be saying, “Yea, so what? What does this have to do with EarthDay and Turnkey Internet?”

That form of electricity is more than likely from a fossil fuel. What exactly is a fossil fuel? A fossil fuel is a fuel that is formed by natural processes such as coal. Using these type of fuels can lead to all sort of environmental issues such as Greenhouse gases being released into the environment. These gases can result in harmful effects to the environment and the people within it which results in a higher carbon footprint. You can read more about forms of electricity and fossil fuels here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fossil-fuel_power_station

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fossil_fuel

The reason I’m even mentioning this is because technology has reached a point in time where different forms of electricity can be created. These different forms can be any of the following listed below and many others:

  1. Solar power – converting energy from the sun to electricity
  2. Hydroelectric Power – Converting energy from water to electricity

Now both of these forms of power conversion each have their pros and cons, but they also have one thing in common: a zero carbon footprint. What exactly is a zero carbon footprint? The Zero Carbon Footprint is the measure of the amount of green house gases produced by burning fossil fuels. The higher the footprint, the worse for the environment. How does this factor into Turnkey Internet? Well, we utilize both, solar power and hydroelectric power, within our datacenter.

On top of our building, we have many different solar panels that convert solar energy directly to electric power to power the datacenter, but not only that, we also receive power from Niagara Falls that directly power the datacenter as well.

That means that our datacenter currently has a zero-carbon footprint which is the most effective way to ensure you leave a good mark on the environment. Every day when I walk into work and look at our datacenter, it makes me proud to know that we’re not damaging the environment. That we are helping to sustain the environment  by using outside of the box methods to power the AWESOME datacenter that is Turnkey Internet.

You can read more about our forms of power at:

http://turnkeyinternet.net/green-initiative/

Since it’s Earth Day, I wanted to bring light to the effectiveness on our power consumption at Turnkey Internet.

Until next time

[PRESS RELEASE] – TurnKey Internet, Inc. introduces their Partner Reseller Program with the TurnKey Desk 2.0   no comments

Posted at Sep 30, 2013 @ 10:46am Announcement,green,New York Datacenter,Press Release

craneday

LATHAM, NEW YORK (September 30, 2013) – Sustainable IT solutions provider TurnKey Internet, Inc. announced today the launch of their TurnKey Desk Partner Program. As an independent partner of TurnKey Internet, reseller clients are able to earn commission off supporting the setup and sales of the brand new TurnKey Desk Virtual Office Network. The “TurnKey Desk 2.0” allows users to easily access what traditionally would be their desktop, now on a smartphone, tablet, or thin client.

“Our intention is to setup a network of independent partner reseller clients throughout the US that are equipped with the tools and knowledge they need to promote and sell the Turnkey Desk 2.0.” Tim Kirsch, Executive Vice President at TurnKey Internet stated, “We have already had some great success with this program with the limited exposure we have promoted thus far. Now that the major upgrades with the Turnkey Desk 2.0 are in place, we feel we are ready to expand our efforts utilizing a network of localized resellers.”

The TurnKey Desk can be used for companies in which hundreds of employees are able to share files and documents with each other, be it down the hall, across the country or around the globe. Files can be accessed, shared and stored securely to help make sharing documents easier and more efficient. The TurnKey Desk can be preloaded with applications useful for both individuals and businesses. Such applications include Microsoft Office and the Adobe Creative Suite, as well as any customizable business applications needed.

“One of the reasons why the virtual desktop market is expanding is because of their ability to replace aging office Desktop PC networks and save companies money,” CEO, Adam Wills said. “For example thin clients cost far less than PC’s with less moving parts and need for maintenance. Since thin clients are only being used to access the virtual desktops, there are almost no IT related costs for companies once it is setup.”
